cover front

The cover of 'Grollo' was the Dutch response to the hippie rage in America.
Harmony with nature, communal living, artistic experimentation particularly in music, and the widespread use of recreational drugs was the fundamental ethos of the hippie generation. All reasons to choose for a cover with a romantic image of the beautiful province Drenthe with sheep, shepherd and a wooden cabin with thatched roof. To complete the ethos Cuby & The Blizzards were put in hippie clothing. Above all a winged fairy; also a kind of hippie.

The album has also got a rather unusual title: 'Greetings from Grollo' marketed with one 'o'. Probably just a mistake. It refers to the Drenthe village Grolloo - the residence of the band.

Cover Back

The back depicts a postcard, witten by Willem de Ridder: a Dutch radio maker, storyteller, magazine maker, internationally known Fluxus artist and Spiegeloog). He writes in a poetic way about what is going on in Grolloo at sunset. Here's a free translation of a part of his words:

'Cuby lets his work in the field to rest after a long day. He starts singing. Somewhere in the night air, Eelco's guitar and his voice melt together. The Blizzards have picked up their instruments and start to play. As Cuby comes closer, the music is clearer and fuller. Girls only keep in, housewives leave the laundry in the tub behind, the innkeeper opens the door of his inn ajar and the clerk forgets to ring the bell. It is breathtaking'

- Willem de Ridder

Cuby & the Blizzards were a Dutch blues group, founded in 1964 by vocalist Harry Muskee, and guitarist Eelco Gelling. During the 1960s, the band's mixture of sound, drawing upon a variety of genres which included blues and rock and roll, gave them a pioneering sound which was completely different from any other Dutch band in the same time period.

The line-up of the band changed regularly, but founders Harry Muskee and Eelco Gelling remained at the core of the band until 1976. Herman Brood was the pianist from early 1967 until mid-1969 (which kickstarted his career) and again in 1976. Also in 1976, Gelling left to join Golden Earring. Muskee then decided to drop the name C+B and to form the Harry Muskee Band.
