release - 1984

cover front

The iconic front cover was created by graphic artist Margo Nahas. It was not specifically commissioned; Nahas had been asked to create a cover that featured four chrome women dancing, but declined.

Her husband brought her portfolio to the band anyway, and from that material they chose the painting of a cherub stealing cigarettes. The model was Carter Helm, who was the child of one of Nahas' best friends, who she photographed holding a candy cigarette. The cover, was 'censored' in the UK by the addition of a sticker that obscured the cigarette in the cherub's hand, and the packet of cigarettes.

Van Halen is an American hard rock band formed in Pasadena, California, in 1972. From 1974 until 1985, the band consisted of guitarist Eddie Van Halen, vocalist David Lee Roth, drummer Alex Van Halen, and bassist Michael Anthony. The band went on to become major stars. 1984 was their most successful album.

In 1985, the band replaced lead singer David Lee Roth with former Montrose lead vocalist Sammy Hagar. Hagar left the band in 1996 shortly before the release of the band's first greatest hits collection, Best Of – Volume I. Former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone was quickly recruited in 1998 as lead singer to replace Hagar, Cherone left the band in frustration in 1999. Van Halen went on hiatus until 2003 when they reunited with Hagar for a worldwide tour.
